The Robert R. Smith, M.D. Gamma Knife Center at Center Mississippi Medical Center is the first and only Gamma Knife center in the state of Mississippi offering treatment with Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ technology. The Gamma Knife Perfexion is used to treat conditions in the brain without invasive surgery. Gamma Knife treatment uses radiation in a very precise way that spares normal, healthy tissue while pinpointing tumors or lesions with high doses of radiation.

About the Technology

The Gamma Knife Perfexion is a highly sophisticated technology that relies on cobalt as its energy source. The gamma radiation that is emitted is shaped into 192 slim beams that are directed to a distinct target in the brain. Because the dose along any single beam is so small, the tissue through which each beam passes is essentially unharmed. As a result, there is little or no radiation delivered to normal surrounding tissue. However, the precise point where the beams converge – for example, at the tumor site – receives a very high dose of radiation.

Conditions Treated

Gamma Knife Perfexion technology is the most accurate form of stereotactic radiation.
It allows for the treatment of:

  Malignant Tumors - single and multiple metastases, gliomas, chondrosarcomas, etc.

  Benign Tumors - acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas), meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, pituitary adenomas, pineal tumors, craniopharyngiomas, chordomas, glomus tumors, etc.

  Functional Disorders - trigeminal neuralgia (facial pain / tic douloureux)
• •
  Vascular Malformations - arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), Cavernous Malformations.

The growing clinical team at the Robert R. Smith Gamma Knife Center consists of  three Neurosurgeons, two Radiation Oncologists and one Ear Nose and Throat specialist.
